Nestor Plasencia Celebrates 75 Years With Birthday Cigar | Cigar Aficionado

Prolific tobacco man and Cigar Aficionado Hall of Famer Nestor Plasencia Sr. turns 75 today and to celebrate, Plasencia Cigars has created a commemorative smoke. It comes only in a Churchill size and is made of Plasencia’s personal blend, but unlike most celebratory smokes, this one isn’t for sale.

So how does one get a box of the Nestor 75? According to the company, they are being sent out as a token of appreciation to associates, strategic partners, accounts, colleagues and others who have supported Plasencia’s endeavors. Because the Nestor 75 is presented as a gift, there is no suggested retail price. The blend is all Nicaraguan and the cigars are made in Nicaragua as well, but specifics are not being disclosed.

Nestor 75 measures 7 inches by 50 ring gauge and comes in 10-count boxes. The first shipments were scheduled to go out today, but because of Hurricane Milton’s looming landfall in Florida, the cigars will be sent out next week. Only 750 boxes were produced.

According to the family history, the Plasencias have been growing tobacco since 1865. The agricultural operation started in Cuba and remained there for nearly a century until Fidel Castro nationalized the tobacco and cigar industry, prompting the family to leave the country. Plasencia and his father, Sixto, relocated to Nicaragua in the early 1960s and started growing tobacco in Jalapa. When the Sandinista regime took over Nicaragua in the 1970s, the Plasencias then moved to Honduras and started over. Eventually, Plasencia returned to Nicaragua and today, along, with his son, Nestor Andrés, Plasencia is the largest producer of premium cigar tobacco in Central America. “The heart of our company is its people,” Plasencia says. “Without them, none of this would be possible.”
